The App Farm launched its first gaming title in March of this year, satisfying a major urge we had to create a modern form of the classic arcade tank game Atari Combat.  Aside from being major classic gaming nerds, we wanted to create an original narrative around the launch of the game emphasizing the old school, as well as the forgotten simplicity of earlier era games.

The game was a success by all measures, garnering great reviews by users as well as the major review sites.  Our ability to cleanly deliver quality game play and a clean user experience from day 1 helped us quickly jump into the charts, breaking in to the top 100 paid games within the first week of launch (out of 7,000 apps at the time).

In addition to the successful positioning of the game as an homage to the classics, The App Farm successfully led a multi-channel guerilla style approach to getting the game noticed.  Our strategy included:

  • Bottoms up community building via screenshot contests, gamer forums, and promo code giveaways
  • Twitter & Facebook groups
  • A Custom built website and blog
  • A Flash version of the game with an interactive level generator
  • Game launch related blog which drove considerable traffic to the site
  • Lite style version of the game (iTunes link here)
